Which Sweeteners are fine on a Low-Carb Diet?

Not all sweeteners are keto-friendly! To learn which are the best keto-friendly sweeteners, read my full review of 15+ Sweeteners.

But in short, there are 3 main families of sweeteners:

  • Sugar Alcohols: very similar to classic table sugar, but some of these sweeteners are not digested by our body, making them 0 carbs!
  • Artificial Sweeteners: they are all 0-carb sweeteners, but aren’t necessarily healthy. Plus they are just not usable in baking at all.
  • Natural Sweeteners: some natural sweeteners are very low in carbs (allulose, stevia), some are much higher (honey, coconut sugar).

The most commonly used sweetener is Erythritol because it behaves just like sugar. However it is less sweet, so it requires slightly larger quantities to reach the same sweetness.

So Erythritol is often found blended with a potent sweetener like Stevia or Monk Fruit to reach the exact same sweetness and behavior as regular sugar.

How do I convert volumes from one keto sweetener to the other?

It’s just maths! Converting sugar or another sweetener to any of the keto-friendly sweeteners is easy!

But instead of giving a complicated formula, we’ve built a converter. Use the button below and

    Your site is so helpful, thank you!

    I am new to Keto and trying to bake some fun items. I can only have Stevia based on the GAPS diet I am following. Most of my recipes use Erythritol so I’m trying to do the conversion to Stevia. I have a question and request:

    – In the converter from Erythritol to Stevia the amount of Stevia was listed as 1/2 tsp, 4 1/2 drops. Does that mean 1/2 tsp OR 4 1/2 drops?

    – Can you include Whole Foods Organic Stevia as an option?

    • Hi Mike, keep in mind that this conversion table is to maintain the same level of sweetness. You can’t always swap erythritol for pure stevia. Erythritol is an ingredient that brings both sweetness and texture (just like sugar in regular recipes).
      While you can replace erythritol for pure liquid stevia in some recipes like smoothies, it won’t work in most baking recipes.

      That being said, many brands advertise their products are Stevia while they are actually a Stevia + Erythritol blend. Whole Foods organic for example exists both as a blend (with erythritol) and pure, for example.

    Fabulous idea creating the sweetener converter. Really helpful for us newbies to Keto/low carb. I’m in Australia though so your brands aren’t available here. Would it be possible to itemise the list alphabetically according to the main sweetener product ie Erythritol, Monk Fruit, Stevia etc and have the brand name after that. That way we could choose the closest equivalent and it would save having to search through the whole list for all the options. I have just made your No-bake Keto Granola bars and looking forward to trying some of your other recipes. Thank you
